Frequently Asked Questions

Is SimplyKatakana really free?

Yes — completely. All 46 katakana characters, every study mode, every feature. No paywall, no subscription. Free forever.

Is my progress saved?

Yes. Your study progress, streaks, and SRS data are saved locally on your device. They persist as long as the app is installed. Deleting and reinstalling the app will reset your progress.

What are the different study modes?

SimplyKatakana offers six modes: Sequential (learn in order), Random (shuffled), Group (one character row at a time), Weak Points (focus on characters you struggle with), SRS Review (due cards only), and SRS Learning (cards still in the learning phase).

How do the swipe directions work?

After revealing a card, swipe right for Easy, up for Good, down for Hard, or left for Again. The app uses your rating to schedule when you'll see that character next — characters you find easy appear less often, while difficult ones reappear sooner.

What are mnemonic hints?

Every katakana character has a built-in visual memory hook — a short phrase or image that connects the character's shape to its sound. For example: ア looks like an "A" with a slanted bar, making the "a" sound easy to remember. Tap the hint button on any card to reveal it.

Why is katakana important?

Katakana is the Japanese script used for foreign loanwords — words borrowed from English and other languages. Once you can read katakana, thousands of words you already know in English become readable in Japanese: アイス (ice cream), コーヒー (coffee), カメラ (camera), and many more.

I found a mistake in the katakana data.

Thank you for helping us improve! Please email support@simplykatakana.com with the character and what needs to be corrected. We'll fix it in the next update.

How do I reset my progress?

You can reset all study data from the Settings tab inside the app. This cannot be undone.
